A Visit to Evolution Darts – Dart Manufacturing Made in Germany

How are soft dart tips, shafts, flight systems and complete tungsten barrels made? During our visit to Evolution Darts, we were able to take a detailed look behind the scenes and experience the most important production steps first-hand.

We saw plastic components being manufactured by injection moulding, tungsten barrels being machined on a CNC lathe and different barrel weights being created without fundamentally changing the external shape of a dart. The visit clearly demonstrated how much experience, precision and technical work goes into every finished product.

Evolution Darts – Darts and Accessories Made in Germany

Evolution Darts was founded in the early 1990s by Bettina and her husband Roland. At the time, sourcing dart equipment from England was considerably more difficult than it is today. Instead of relying entirely on imported products, they began developing and manufacturing their own dart accessories in Germany.

Since 2012, Evolution has operated from its current production facility. A wide range of products for the sport of darts is developed and manufactured there, including:

Many production stages take place directly on site. This enables Evolution not only to manufacture established products, but also to develop new ideas, produce prototypes, carry out durability tests and improve products when necessary.

How Evolution Soft Tips Are Made

One of the most interesting parts of our visit was seeing the well-known Evolution soft dart tips being produced. The tips are manufactured using an injection-moulding process.

Prepared plastic material is heated and injected under pressure into a specially designed mould. After a controlled cooling phase, the mould opens and the finished tips are released into a collection container.

This process allows large quantities of tips to be produced with consistent dimensions and shape. To achieve reliable results, the material composition, temperature, pressure, mould design and cooling time must all be precisely coordinated.

Evolution soft tips feature a standard 2BA thread and are available in a wide selection of colours. They fit many commonly used soft dart barrels and are suitable for recreational players as well as league and tournament players.

Shafts and the Evo-One Flight System

The injection-moulding department also produces dart shafts and components for the Evo-One flight and shaft system. Each product requires its own precision mould. The heated plastic is injected into the mould, cooled and then released for inspection and further processing.

Evolution also presented the revised version of the Evo-One system. On the earlier model, the upper section of the flight was comparatively thin and could be damaged under heavy impact. The new version has been reinforced at the top and on the inside to improve durability.

During the visit, the revised system was subjected to a demanding test in which the complete dart was repeatedly thrown onto the floor. The Evo-One system remained visibly undamaged, demonstrating the benefit of the reinforced construction.

From Tungsten Blank to Finished Dart Barrel

Another highlight was the production of tungsten dart barrels. The process begins with a plain blank made from a tungsten alloy. This blank is clamped into a CNC machine and gradually transformed into the finished barrel.

First, the basic profile is created. The machine then forms the diameter, contours, grooves and individual grip zones with a high degree of precision. During machining, it is easy to see how the characteristic Evolution cuts and grip patterns gradually emerge from the raw material.

The barrel design is programmed directly at the CNC machine. Before production begins, a virtual model and machining simulation can be created. Images of this model can be sent to the customer for approval, allowing changes to the shape or grip to be made before the barrel is manufactured.

After machining, the barrel is still extremely hot and must cool before it can be inspected and processed further. The result is a precisely manufactured dart barrel with clearly defined dimensions, balance and grip characteristics.

Different Weights with a Similar Barrel Shape

A particularly interesting feature of several Evolution dart ranges is the way different barrel weights are created. With many dart models, the external shape changes when the same design is offered in different weights. A lighter barrel may be shorter or thinner, which can also alter the position of the grip zones and the overall feel.

Evolution often works from a defined base weight. For lighter versions, material is removed from inside the barrel by drilling from the front or rear, depending on the desired balance.

This allows the external shape, length, diameter and grip layout to remain as similar as possible across different weight options. Players who prefer a particular barrel design can therefore retain a familiar grip feel even when choosing another weight.

Why Soft Tip and Steel Tip Darts Do Not Always Play the Same

Many players use a soft tip barrel with a metal conversion point when playing on a bristle board. Although the setup may look almost identical, the balance and flight characteristics can change noticeably.

A metal conversion point adds weight at the very front of the dart. During our visit, it was explained that a screw-in metal point can weigh around 1.5 grams. Because this weight is concentrated at the front, it can shift the centre of gravity forward and influence the flight path and entry angle.

Evolution checks the centre of gravity using specialist equipment. The barrel can then be drilled from the front or rear to adjust weight distribution. This makes it possible to produce soft tip and steel tip versions of the same model that feel as similar as possible.

Custom and Personalised Darts

Thanks to its in-house CNC production, Evolution can manufacture not only standard models but also individually designed dart barrels. A wide range of features can be tailored to the player's requirements:

Weight distribution and centre of gravity

Custom engravings and markings

The desired dart is first programmed and displayed as a virtual model. Once the design has been approved, production can begin. This combination of planning, simulation and precision machining allows Evolution to create highly individual dart setups.

Our Impression of Evolution Darts

Our visit to Evolution Darts was especially valuable because we were able to experience the production processes directly. Videos and photographs can provide useful insights, but seeing the machines, materials and individual stages in person gives a much clearer understanding of the work involved.

The production of the soft tips, the injection moulding of shafts and flight systems, and the machining of tungsten blanks were particularly impressive. We were also fascinated by the way different barrel weights and matching soft tip and steel tip versions can be created.

The visit showed that overall weight is only one part of how a dart feels. Barrel shape, grip structure, balance and the position of the centre of gravity are just as important.

At Dartfieber, you can find Evolution soft dart tips in a wide range of colours. They feature a standard 2BA thread and fit many commonly used soft dart barrels.

The tips are approximately 22 mm long excluding the thread and weigh around 0.29 g each. Their durable construction makes them suitable for regular practice, league matches and tournament play.

For testing, the tips are available in a small pack of 10 pieces. Players, teams and clubs with higher usage can also choose the larger pack containing 500 Evolution tips.
