Steedarts

The steel-tipped dart sector, in particular, is experiencing strong growth due to the PDC tournaments and, above all, the Darts World Cup in December. Every year, newcomers find their way to darts at the Darts World Cup.

In addition to permanently pressed-in tips, which can only be changed with a changing tool, various manufacturers also offer steel-tipped dart systems where the tips can be easily changed with a small tool, similar to soft-tip darts. The Swiss-Point system from Target and the EVO system from Caliburn are the most popular.

Choosing the Right Steel Dart Weight

Choosing the Right Steel Dart Weight Choosing the right dart weight is one of the most important decisions when buying a new set of steel darts. The ideal weight depends less on what professional players use and much more on your personal throwing style. Every player throws differently, so there is no single perfect weight for everyone.

Most steel darts weigh between 18 and 26 grams, with 22 to 24 grams being the most popular range. These weights offer an excellent balance of control, accuracy, and stability.

Lightweight Steel Darts (18–21 Grams)

Lightweight steel darts are ideal for players with a fast, dynamic throwing style. Because they have less mass, they can be thrown at higher speeds and travel directly towards the board when released cleanly.

Advantages:

  • Fast release and high throwing speed
  • Less fatigue during long practice sessions
  • Ideal for players who use a lot of wrist action
  • Excellent for tight groupings

Recommended for:

  • Advanced players
  • Players with a fast throwing style
  • Those who prefer throwing with more speed

Medium Weight Steel Darts (22–24 Grams)

This is by far the most popular weight category and suits the majority of dart players. It offers the perfect balance between stability, control, and throwing speed.

23 grams is widely regarded as the standard dart weight and is often recommended for beginners as well as ambitious recreational players.

Advantages:

  • Well-balanced flight characteristics
  • Excellent control
  • Suitable for almost every throwing style
  • Huge selection from all major manufacturers

Recommended for:

  • Beginners
  • Recreational players
  • League players
  • Most dart players

Heavy Steel Darts (25–26 Grams)

Heavier darts provide a very stable flight and require slightly less acceleration during the throw. Many players appreciate the extra control, especially those with a smooth and relaxed throwing action.

Advantages:

  • Very stable flight
  • Less effort required during acceleration
  • Excellent control for smooth throwing styles
  • Solid feel in the hand

Recommended for:

  • Players with a relaxed throwing style
  • Experienced players
  • Anyone looking for maximum stability

Extra Heavy Steel Darts (27–30 Grams and Above)

Steel darts weighing 27 grams or more are less common today than they once were. They provide outstanding stability but often require some adjustment to your throwing technique. For beginners, they are generally not the best choice.

However, many experienced players still prefer heavier darts because of their exceptionally smooth and controlled flight.

Advantages:

  • Maximum stability
  • Extremely smooth flight
  • Less affected by minor throwing errors

Recommended for:

  • Players with a slower throwing motion
  • Fans of heavy darts
  • Experienced dart players

Our Recommendation

If you're unsure which weight is right for you, we recommend the following guideline:

  • 22 grams: Ideal for players with a fast and powerful throw.
  • 23 grams: The all-round choice and the best option for most beginners and recreational players.
  • 24 grams: Offers additional stability and control while maintaining a familiar feel.
  • 25–26 grams: Perfect for players who prefer a slower, smoother throw with maximum stability.

Ultimately, the best dart weight is the one that feels most comfortable in your hand. Many players try several different weights before finding their perfect setup. Even a difference of just one gram can noticeably affect both the flight and feel of a dart, making it worthwhile to experiment until you find the setup that perfectly matches your throwing style.
